One of the focal points of International Youth Day is to bring awareness and recognition to the challenges that young people face in todays society. Pediatric rehabilitation is designed to improve the abilities of children and young people following major injury, illness or medical procedures which affect their function. Rehabilitation programs aim to improve the ability of the child to participate in activities at home, school and within the community. Methods such as physical, occupational, and speech therapy are often used to facilitate the recovery processes. Furthermore, the utilization of assistive devices and telemedicine are also utilised to reduce elevated tone and facilitate postural alignment.
Rehabilitation, whether it is in the form of therapeutic programs or professional services led by physicians or rehabilitative experts in the field, are imperative when assisting children in recovering or maintaining functionality when interacting with their environment, improving quality of life and autonomy. Early access to rehabilitation is crucial for children while they are in the stage of development as their motor abilities are still malleable, therefore significantly reducing the probability of the development of more severe levels of disability in the future.
In light of this, this Frontiers in Rehabilitation Sciences article collection aims to focus on pediatric rehabilitation from a global perspective, taking into consideration the experience and involvement of adolescents, caregivers, and service providers in various aspects of the rehabilitative process. Furthermore, we aim to highlight the recent advancements in pediatric rehabilitation as well as exploring the implementation of best practices in the field of pediatric rehabilitation.
