Acute heart failure is a medical emergency with a poor prognosis and few evidence-based treatment options. In the past decades, multiple promising treatment pathways were investigated in large, randomized trials, but most showed neutral findings, despite testing treatment approaches that were promising from a pathophysiological point of view. One key reason for this might be the heterogeneity of the acute heart failure patient population, as the many different triggers and co-occurring comorbidities create independent disease trajectories, which might each respond differently to the available treatment approaches.
The goal of this Research Topic is to unravel how the diagnostic and therapeutic pathways in acute heart failure care can be personalized to improve patient care. The topic will focus on providing improved insights into the heterogeneity of disease trajectories, assessing how diagnostic approaches can be optimized to factor in the heterogeneity of the disease, and identifying key components that determine treatment response in patients with acute heart failure. Ultimately, this will enable the physician to put the patient in the center and tailor the treatment accordingly.
For this Research Topic, we are interested in original research articles that evaluate and test the above-discussed aspects. Specifically, we invite contributors to submit manuscripts that describe approaches to re-use existing diagnostics and treatments in a clearly defined patient sub-population.
