The growing size of the world’s aging community has led to a surge in the prevalence of chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases, osteoarthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, etc. These conditions pose important challenges not only to the patient’s physical well-being but to their mental well-being as well. Nearly one-third of people with chronic physical conditions have co-morbid psychiatric disorders such as depression or anxiety disorders. Co-morbidity of physical and mental illness is known to exacerbate functional impairments. Therefore, early detection and intervention of psychiatric disorders are necessary to improve the overall well-being of this population.
This Research Topic aims to promote the collaboration of professional multidisciplinary teams to foster high-standard studies of comprehensive care, research, and best practice in diagnosing and managing co-morbid psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic physical diseases.
This topic will help the researchers to get an in-depth understanding of the comorbidity between chronic physical diseases and psychiatric conditions.
The shared implications of the study findings aim to:
a) provide an overview of recent advances in co-morbidity of physical and mental illness.
b) identify comprehensive intervention strategies to reduce negative mental health consequences.
c) enhance awareness of comorbidities between chronic physical diseases and psychiatric conditions, as well as their implications.
This collection will focus on a range of problems in managing psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic physical diseases. And manuscripts focused on various aspects of this topic are welcomed.
We are particularly interested in manuscripts that deal with the following important questions:
How do we diagnose psychiatric disorders in patients with chronic physical diseases more efficiently?
How do we care for older adults with long-term conditions and co-morbid mental health problems?
How do we train healthcare professionals who care for older adults with comorbidity of chronic physical diseases and psychiatric conditions?
Manuscripts that are welcomed include original research, systematic review/data analyses, mini review, clinical trial, and study protocol.
