The accurate interpretation and effective evaluation of pharmaceuticals and natural products are one of the ongoing challenges facing scientists worldwide. Pharmaceuticals, especially natural medicines, have a rich chemical composition, and different compound properties and vary greatly in content, which makes their separation, characterization, and quality evaluation more difficult. Biological samples, such as cells, blood, and tissues, are rich in metabolites, and matrix effects are so pronounced that a single analytical or evaluation tool often fails to balance the requirements of coverage, throughput, sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and cost-effectiveness. In recent years, the continuous improvement of conventional analytical techniques and the emergence of innovative analytical tools have opened up vast opportunities and possibilities for the analysis and evaluation of important pharmaceuticals and natural products. With the continuous development of technologies such as multidimensional liquid chromatography, ambient ionization techniques and mass spectrometry imaging, microfluidic chips and single-cell analysis platforms, and novel functionalized nanomaterials, the precise analysis and evaluation of pharmaceuticals and natural products are expected to reach a higher level in the future, and further explore new drugs, key disease markers and other series of research findings will better benefit human health.
This research topic focuses on the recent advances in the analysis and evaluation of pharmaceuticals and natural products. The analytical objectives not only cover various pharmaceutical substances, such as synthetic drugs, natural herbs, novel medicines, but also include a variety of biological substances, such as metabolites, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, and other small molecules, etc., and include complex samples or biological samples, such as blood, urine, tissue, traditional Chinese medicines, etc. The methodologies cover chromatographic analysis, mass spectrometric analysis, spectral analysis, imaging analysis, optical biosensors, and portable detection equipment/platforms, etc. The Topic Editors hope to promote communications between researchers from different research directions and to promote the development of related fields.
We welcome authors to submit Original research articles, Reviews, Mini Reviews, and Perspectives on the following themes that include, but are not limited to:
• New methods and technologies for the separation, characterization, and detection of pharmaceuticals and natural products;
• Research on quality control and safety evaluation of synthetic drugs and herbal medicines;
• Analysis of complex biological systems, as well as metabolomics, lipidomics, and proteomics research;
• Isolation and preparation of natural origin compounds and their activity evaluation.
