The emergence of new epidemics has significantly increased threats to public health and safety for humans, much like the spread of SARS-CoV-2-associated pneumonia. Similar to this, the emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals, especially zoonotic diseases, have also attracted more and more attention. Emerging novel pathogens in economic animals like chickens, ducks, pigs, and others have resulted in significant financial losses. There are regular reports of pathogen recombinations, mutations, and cross-transmission of recognized infections among diverse hosts. Case reports of certain unknown pathogens in wild animals are also common.

Numerous novel viral variations and antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been found in animals in recent years, including COVID-19, avian influenza virus, the novel genotype fowl adenovirus 4, porcine delta coronavirus, multi-drug resistant staphylococci, etc . The ability to prevent and control animal emerging diseases will be greatly enhanced by the discovery of new pathogens, diagnostic methods, vaccinations, and medications for emerging and reemerging diseases.

In this Research Topic, all research articles, communications, reviews, and case reports associated with animal emerging and re-emerging diseases are welcomed. The manuscript can be focused on, but not limited to:

- the characterization of novel pathogens
- novel emerging diagnostic methods and control strategies for pathogens
- animal models for emerging diseases
- novel vaccines and medicines for the emerging diseases
