Novel designs must drive technological innovations and advancements with significant functions to meet contemporary society’s challenges.
In molecular biology and cellular genetics, the central dogma exemplifies the prominent role of RNA to act as a mere messenger of the information from genomic DNA to the synthesis of various proteins. However, the RNA molecules are most versatile and are much more than mere messengers.
Several novel discoveries depicted unique mechanisms and plasticity of RNA structure and functions in the past few decades. The versatility of design and roles of various RNA forms have exponentially exploded in recent times. Increasingly, there have been a greater understanding and acceptance of noncoding RNA (miRNA, sRNA, siRNA, etc.) as a versatile and potent regulator of cellular processes in plants and other species. RNAs have enormous potential to impact our lives positively. RNAs can help regulate cellular physiology and processes via enzymatic action, diverse molecular interactions (RNA-protein, RNA-RNA, RNA-DNA, RNA-small molecules or ions), chromatin remodeling, etc.
The discovery of the abundant nature of ncRNAs in eukaryotes (plants and animals) demonstrated that plasticity empowers the coordination and regulation of gene expression, quality control, immune responses, growth, and development, which external stresses affect (biotic and abiotic pressures). Moreover, the increasing evidence of RNA plasticity in various forms and modifications in higher organisms indicates that the highly evolved regulatory mechanisms are established, which control and integrate with other complex processes like epigenetic modifications via RNA editing, splicing, and structure.
This Research Topic on “RNA Plasticity: Novel Structures, Shapes, Modifications, and Functions” will welcome full-length original research articles and review articles focused on various aspects of novel structures, modifications, and biological roles of RNA as regulatory molecules. Additionally, contributions towards short communications and perspectives will be considered.

- Novel design and modifications of RNA
- RNAi/Silencing
- Modeling or prediction algorithms/methods: RNA stability, structure, and functions
