Water forms the basis of life on our planet and is fundamental to biodiversity on the Earth. However, the available freshwater for human use in agricultural, domestic, and industrial sectors is very limited compared to the total water requirement. Actually, many areas are suffering from water scarcity. Among the causes, climate change and water resource deterioration synergistically reduce available water sources. Since the majority of freshwater is used for agriculture, maximizing the agricultural productivity (per unit of fresh water) under the various environmental stressors via best management practices is critical to achieving SDGs and supporting the sustainability of natural resources (water, soil, etc.).This Research Topic focuses on the critical assessment and monitoring of current agricultural/ water management practices and possible solutions for sustainable agricultural water management. High-quality research articles that examine existing and innovative methods of sustainable use of water resources for agriculture are encouraged. This Research Topic will address the following problems:- Assessment of current water use practices in irrigation/agriculture and improving water use efficiency.- Cost-effective irrigation methods.- Water resources availability and how they are impacted by climate change and seasonal variabilities.- Adaptation and mitigation strategies to promote the growth of varieties of crops under water stress conditions.- Automated irrigation systems and use of modern technologies (sensors, IoT,...etc).- Development of horticulture best practices to increase water productivity.- Economics of water usage in agriculture.- Virtual-water best practices and water footprint.- Management of water resources based on monitoring, assessment, and modelling (simulation and optimization).- Greenhouses best practices and technological greenhouses.- Cost-effective technologies for safe reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture.
