Offshore wind power is environment-friendly energy for human beings, but it may not be so for aquatic animals. Underwater noise is generated during the construction, service, operation and decommissioning of offshore wind farms, i.e., underwater noise during pile installation, noise generated by wind turbine vibrations during the operation, etc. The possible impact of the generated noise and vibrations on aquatic animals has hindered the further integration of offshore wind farms and marine pastures to a certain extent. It is of great significance to understand the generation and propagation mechanisms of underwater noise, the vibrations of the seafloor, and their impact on aquatic animals during the whole lifetime of a wind farm and put forward the marine biological acoustic protection technology.
This research topic aims to discuss the underwater noise and vibrations generated during the construction and operation of offshore wind farms and their potential impact on aquatic animals, as well as relevant underwater noise /vibration mitigation methods. We hope to solicit papers that will help us better understand the interaction between offshore wind fields and aquatic animals and gather the latest achievements of corresponding acoustic protection methods and technologies.
We welcome original research articles, methods, model tests, field measured data, mini-reviews, and short communications on the following sub-themes (but not limited to):
• Underwater noise and seabed vibrations caused by impact and vibratory pile installation
• Dynamic soil-foundation interaction at an acoustic frequency range
• Noise and seabed vibrations caused by other dynamic excitations, i.e., earthquakes, ship collisions, etc.
• Underwater noise and seabed vibrations caused during operation of offshore wind turbines
• Effects of underwater noise related to offshore wind turbines on mammals and fish
• Noise mitigation and vibration suppression methods related to offshore wind turbines
• Dynamic safety problems in the combination of the offshore wind farms and offshore pasture
