Chronic wounds have become a global concern as the population ages and the incidence of obesity, diabetes and vascular disease increases. In China, more than 30 million chronic wound patients require treatment each year, and in the United States, chronic wounds affect 2.5% of the population. Etiology and clinical presentations of chronic wounds are complex, the treatment of which usually involves multiple disciplines and specialties. Patients with chronic wounds are often scattered across multiple departments.
To adapt the changes in the disease spectrums and standardize wound treatment, China released officially the "Notice of the National Health Commission on Strengthening the Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Wounds" in November 2019, leading to the establishment of the Discipline of Wound Repair. Since then, many hospitals have established wound repair departments in China. However, the common standards for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic wounds are still missing.
A comprehensive understanding about the discipline of Wound Repair, including its development, etiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and progress in basic research and new clinical technologies, is in urgent need for all practitioners involved. By focusing upon those unresolved problems, we hope this research topic will play an important role in advancing the discipline of Wound Repair in China and globally.
We welcome Original Articles, Reviews, Opinions, and Case reports on the following topics, but are not limited to:
- Development and progress of Wound Repair Discipline
