Dementia is characterized by cognitive decline leading to loss of independent functioning, often related to a neurodegenerative disorder. Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of dementia. One in three adults over the age of 85 has Alzheimer’s dementia. The cost of healthcare from dementia is estimated to be $321 billion in 2022, with a projected increase to $1 trillion by 2050. Dementias are almost always accompanied by neurobehavioral symptoms increasing the caregiver burden and adversely affecting the quality of life for the patient and caregiver.
With the shift of the healthcare system towards a value-based system, there is an increased emphasis on addressing these chronic diseases with high costs associated with them using strategies that can be deployed targeting large populations.
This Research Topic will focus on population-based interventions to address the key challenges in global dementia care. The articles will identify areas of disparity like geographical location, racial inequalities, and knowledge gaps that challenge the prospects of population management of dementia. They will review the screening of cognitive disorders, collaborative care models, ancillary support systems, and educational programs currently in practice. Articles may also review the role of health systems in the prevention of cognitive disorders among people, including younger adults.
