With the increasing demand for marine scientific research and the harvesting of deep-sea resources, such as crude oil, natural gas hydrate and polymetallic nodules, the investigation of deep-sea environment and mineral resources has become more and more important. Therefore, it is essential to develop high-accuracy and reliable detection technologies, including environmental in-situ, dynamic and multidisciplinary monitoring, and high-fidelity sampling of fluids, sediments and benthos. In recent years, the abovementioned technologies have been successfully deployed at the depth of 3000m all over the world to study the metallogenic mechanism and environmental effects of natural gas hydrate, massive sulfide deposit and other mineral resources. However, at a greater depth, such as 6000 m or more, including the submarine plain with polymetallic nodules and the deeper hadal trenches, the equipment and technical methods developed by mankind are still limited, and we still need to carry out continuous technological research in the future.
Firstly, this topic aims to provide technical solutions for scientific research, e.g., trapping and in-situ observation on biology, high-fidelity sampling and the consequent non-destructive detection on samples. Secondly, the topic addresses issues of developing detection technologies for deep-sea environments, including pressure and temperature holding, power supply, extreme high-pressure endurance, long-term sensor accuracy, etc. Thirdly, this topic attempts to effectively integrate technology and sciences, focusing on the application results of ocean observation technology. Readers could understand the common technical issues and latest scientific progress in deep sea, thus contributing to the integrated development of marine engineering technology and scientific theory.
This Research Topic calls for original and novel papers related, but not limited to the following research fields:
• High-fidelity sampling on deep-sea sediment, fluid, micro- and macro- organism et al.
• High-fidelity analyzing technology following sampling.
• High-fidelity transferring and secondly sampling technology.
• Isobaric collection and in-situ observation of deep-sea animals.
• Deployment and retrieval technology of sampling and detection equipment.
