There is significant controversy concerning return to sport rehabilitation and testing. This controversy stems from a lack of standardisation in late stage rehabilitation after sports injuries as well as in return to sport testing. Even in areas with significant research (i.e. anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction rehabilitation), there is considerable heterogeneity in practice. More research is needed to determine best practice when working with athletes attempting to return to sport.
The purpose of this Research Topic is to add to the growing body of research around return to sport rehabilitation and testing in athletes recovering from various sports related injuries. We intend to provide insights on a broad range of injuries and the return to sport training and testing considerations. This issue will include original research and clinical perspectives concerning late stage rehabilitation, transitioning from rehabilitation to performance, and return to sport testing. Experts with clinical/research backgrounds in various different patient populations will be invited to contribute to this special issue.
We welcome submissions that address the following specific sub themes:
• Strategies that enhance outcomes and reduce re-injury risk
• Explosive exercise
• Training load
• Psychological readiness in return to sport
• Re-training of sport-specific movement patterns
• Influence of fatigue
• Return to sport tests
• Sport-specific rehabilitation
