We are now entering the third decade of the 21st Century, and, especially in the last years, the achievements made by scientists have been exceptional, leading to major advancements in the fast-growing area of Consciousness and Empathy.
Frontiers has organized a series of Research Topics to highlight the latest advancements in research across the field of Behavioral Neuroscience, with articles from the Associate Members of our accomplished Editorial Boards. This editorial initiative of particular relevance, led by Prof. Walter Adriani, Specialty Chief Editor of the Individual and Social Behaviors section, together with Prof. Curcio, is focused on new insights, novel developments, current challenges, latest discoveries, recent advances, and future perspectives in the area of Consciousness and Empathy.
This Research Topic solicits forward-looking contributions, either from editorial board members or active researchers, that describe the state of the art, in the fields of human basic and clinical neuroscience as well as for the sake of animal modelling. Related issues comprise (but are not limited to) self-awareness, states of consciousness, metacognition, imitation, emotional contagion, as well as their neurobiological and psychophysiological substrates. Contributions on novel methods and innovative techniques to investigate such issues are also welcomed. We are aiming at outlining not only recent developments but also major accomplishments that yet need to occur, to move the field forward. Authors are encouraged to identify the greatest challenges in these sub-disciplines, and how to address those challenges.
The goal of this special edition Research Topic is to shed light on the progress made in the past decade in the area of Consciousness and Empathy, and to provide a thorough overview on its future challenges.
