International Yoga Day takes place on the 21st of June, celebrating the mental and physical prowess that yoga has brought to the world. With centuries of history nowadays millions of people practice yoga daily. Primary aim of yoga is well-being, both physical and mental.
Nowadays, mental health problems constitute a major health and humanitarian crisis with individuals of all ages being at variable risk. Mental health problems have a big impact on the quality of life and functionality of those affected. Several recent studies have shown that yoga has positive effects on mental health by improving psychological well-being in both clinical and non-clinical populations.
It is in this spirit that Frontiers is launching a new article collection titled “New Insights into Yoga and Mental Health” to coincide with this UN day. This occasion offers an opportunity to acknowledge the UN International Day of Yoga and to celebrate the advantages Yoga has brought to the aging population.
This Research Topic aims to address the Neuroscience-specific dimensions of this UN day.
Topics may include but are by no means limited to:
- Effects of practicing Yoga on mental health in children and adolescents
- Effects of Yoga on functional brain network connectivity in key regions associated with mood
- Effects of practicing Yoga on autonomic and metabolic function of individuals with mental health problems
- Yoga as a tool to prevent mental health problems progression
