The immune system plays a key role in the maintenance of antigen homeostasis in humans. Stress factors, including psychological stress and environmental factors, sleep disorder, and changes in diet have a serious impact on human adaptive and innate immunity. Underlying mechanisms include activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, micronutrient deficiencies, and changes in gut microbiota among others. However, up to now despite growing data in this scientific area, exact mechanisms and their interrelations of such changes are only partly understood.
Cases of immune-related diseases at least have doubled in the last decades. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct comprehensive studies contributing to our understanding of the influence of different environmental factors, sleep, and diet on the human immune system. Therefore, this research topic aims at summarizing findings i) from research investigating the complex interplay between stress factors on immunity and their interrelations with the microbiota-gut-brain-axis and ii) on countermeasures for the challenged and/or impaired immune system.
This Research Topic welcomes studies related to the immune system in stress conditions and in relation to the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
