We are delighted to present the inaugural Frontiers in Future Transportation 'Women in Transportation Research” series of article collections.
At present, less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers. Furthermore, engineers which make up a large percentage of contributors to Frontiers in Future Transportation has only 16.5% women.
Following the celebration of International Women’s Day 2022, the UNESCO International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and in conjunction with the International Women in Engineering Day 2022, Frontiers in Future Transportation is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all areas of transportation research. All of our Topic Editors are women working on transportation-related research.
The work presented here highlights the diversity of research performed across the entire breadth of transportation research and presents advances in theory, experiment, and methodology with applications to compelling problems.
Frontiers in Future Transportation publishes research on scientific and technological innovations that will transform the future of transport and mobility systems and wants to hear the voice and perspective of women in this area.
This article collection is open for submissions across all sections of the journal, and new articles will be added as they are published.
Please note: to be considered for this collection, the first or last author should be a researcher who identifies as a woman.
