The microbiome of a crop species includes bacteria, fungi and protozoans on or within different plant parts. Microbiomes provide a beneficial role to plants in the form of enhanced water and nutrient absorption, protection against pathogenic microbes, resistance to abiotic stresses etc. Microbiomes even enhance yield potential
of crop species. Alteration in plant microbiome profiles significantly impacts the plant health and performance. As such, the maintenance or treatment of crop species with beneficial microbes not only improves yield but also enhance performance under different environments. Recent bioinformatic technological advances have deciphered a myriad of microbial species conferring beneficial role to crop species under different conditions. For sustainable agriculture, the microbiome profiling of important crop species needs to be carried out, Further, evaluation of in-depth crop specific host-microbe interaction mechanisms need to be elucidated. New statistical and bioinformatic approaches need to be developed to mitigate the challenges in crop-microbiome data analysis.
Overall, the present research topic focuses on microbiome profiling of important crop species, functional role of microbiomes in enhancing plant performance, statistical and bioinformatic approaches for deeper understanding of plant-microbiome relationships and interaction networks.
