Several different classes of new psychoactive substances (NPS) of abuse have emerged in the market. Not only they present major law enforcement challenges, but also public health threat in the world. These include synthetic psychostimulants, cannabinoids, opioids, and other illicit substances. However, there is limited information on their deleterious effects on the CNS, cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems. Therefore, it is important to further expand our understanding of the pharmacology and toxicology of these illicit drugs and to provide useful information regarding their deleterious effects to both clinicians and the governmental policymakers to create strict policies for control of their use and abuse.
This Research Topic aims to publish breakthrough findings encompassing the pharmacology/toxicology of new psychoactive substances, which includes their effects in the brain and cardiovascular, respiratory, and gastrointestinal systems.
We welcome basic and clinical research manuscripts and reviews addressing the following themes:
1. Pharmacological effects of new psychoactive substances on the brain including reward and stress circuits and their implication in addiction and other psychiatric disorders.
2. Pharmacological effects of new psychoactive substances on neurotransmitters systems in the CNS involved in motivated and emotional behaviors and their implication in addiction and other psychiatric disorders.
3. Pharmacological and toxic effects of these substances in the periphery including the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems.
