Over the last decade, there has been a growing interest and important developments in investigating the link between neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular diseases. The research on cerebrovascular disease and treatment mechanisms has an important impact on neurodegenerative diseases, and vice versa. Although there are obvious differences between these two kinds of diseases, the connection in pathogenesis, the interaction in the process of development, the complex role of the same high-risk factors, and even the mutual reference of treatment mechanism deserves our attention. These advances have been fostered by improvements in the research techniques that enable us to gather insights from different approaches, together with the need to better understand common pathogenic mechanisms to develop an effective treatment which is currently lacking for many diseases under these umbrella terms.
Whilst the community can be proud of major advances, there is still a long way to go. In this Research Topic, we encourage researchers to summarize the state-of-the-art advances and the main challenges in the field of common pathogenic/treatment mechanisms between cerebrovascular and neurodegenerative disease. We also welcome contributions that look into the future and define the directions that the field will take in the coming years. What have been the key discoveries so far?
