Brain cognitive functions refer to the mental process that allows reception, integration, storage, and recovery of information received from external stimuli. These mental process helps build skills required to carry out complex tasks. They are related to attention, learning, and memory and rely on proper development, maturation, and maintenance of neural networks. Neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders, for which no treatment is currently available, compromise impairment in cognitive functions and constitute a major health issue with significant social and economic impact. Molecular mechanisms underlying long-term changes in synaptic function are likely to be at the core feature of cognitive impairment and associated neurological disorders in humans. Both mammalian and non-mammalian models have led to significant advances in our understanding of how synapses form, function, and are remodeled by learning. Using animal models shall help identify interventions and therapies that can alter the progress of neurological disorders and slow down cognitive decline.
This research topic aims to highlight recent advances in understanding molecular mechanisms of cognition as learned from animal models. It will evaluate new approaches developed to scrutinize cognitive behaviors and address neuroprotective and disease-modifying strategies for neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders.
