The UN International Day for Plant Health takes place on 12th May. It follows the International Year of Plant Health and was set up to raise awareness globally on how protecting plant health can help end hunger and poverty, protect biodiversity and the environment, and aid economic development.
It is in this spirit that Frontiers is launching a new article collection to coincide with this UN day.
Cassava is a staple crop for millions of people across the world. It is an excellent source of energy due to its high levels of carbohydrate and its ability to be stored for long periods of time which make it an excellent food reserve. The cassava crop is threatened by a number of pests and diseases including Cassava Mosaic Disease and Cassava Brown Streak Disease. Sustainably protecting this crop from pests and diseases, without causing damage to the environment, will be vital to ensuring future food security.
This Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems Research Topic aims to address the dimensions of this UN day, highlighting the importance of having a healthy cassava crop and considering how we can sustainably achieve this.
Topics may include, but are by no means limited to:
- Identification and breeding of disease-resistant and tolerance traits
- Crop disease diagnostics and detection
- Sustainable techniques to prevent disease outbreaks
-Disease resilient systems
-Sustainable biological disease control
The role of farmer education and national coordination of effective responses to disease outbreaks
