Non-coding RNAs including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) or micro RNAs (miRNAs) are emerging as a key player in regulating different stages of cancer. With the advancement of transcriptomic studies, lncRNAs lacking any protein coding sequence, have been shown to act epigenetically, transcriptionally, post transcriptionally or at translation and post translation levels to alter gene expression in cancer cells. Often lncRNAs act in association with miRNAs to bring the alteration in gene expression during cancer development. For example, hypoxia, which is a major hallmark of the tumor microenvironment affecting cancer progression and metastasis, is regulated by the interplay between lncRNA and microRNA axes. Very recently, circular RNAs (circRNAs) that form covalently closed structures, more stable than their linear counterparts, have been found to influence tumorigenesis. These closed RNAs are often found to sponge miRNAs and are overexpressed in different cancers. Research in the last decade has shown the huge impact of this non-coding transcriptome in oncogenic or tumour suppressive roles and points to the use of these RNAs as biomarkers and therapeutic tools for future diagnosis and treatment.
This special issue will focus on the role of the non-coding transcriptome in development of solid tumours and its metastasis aiming to collect high-quality Original Research articles and Review articles related to the non-coding transcriptome and solid tumor development, with the focus being on novel findings and advancements in our understanding of lncRNAs either used as biomarkers or as promising therapeutic targets for treating cancer. This issue also considers mini review articles or commentaries for publication with the aim to reach students at various stages of their academic career.
In this special issue, we welcome authors to contribute their original research articles. Review articles/mini-review, as well as other types of articles will also be appreciated in the journal that include, but are not limited to the following sub-themes:
• Relationship between lncRNA and tumor development
• Role of microRNA in development of solid tumors or their metastases
• Interplay between lncRNA and microRNA in boosting or supressing the tumor microenvironment
• Relationship between circRNAs and the progression of solid tumors
• Therapeutic strategies targeting non coding RNAs
• Advancement in the field of technologies to detect these biomolecules in prognosis of solid tumors.
