Modern society depends on research and the advancement of science in order to achieve health and prosperity for all. However, to build on already successful science, we encompass the need to discuss the current challenges and issues faced.
Frontiers in Sport and Active Living recognizes the importance of facilitating debate and discussion amongst the community, and so has organized a series of Research Topics, offering a platform for such discussion to occur in the field of sports science.
This Research Topic entitled `Debates in Elite Sports and Performance Enhancement` aims to highlight themes that foster debate and discussion in the high-performance sports industry. We encourage authors to submit opinions or perspective pieces that focus on the ‘pros’ or ‘cons’ of all areas surrounding the athlete’s environment for performance enhancement. We also welcome case studies, comparative studies, original research, and review articles that stimulate debate. The goal is to respectfully challenge perspectives and paradigms to enhance sports performance.
Of particular interest are pieces that relate to the utility and application of training or nutrition practices that affect professional athletes’ performance. Other topics of interest might include but are not limited to:
- Early sport specialization and relative age effect
- Injury and illness in elite sport and return-to-play experience
- Gender and 'race' inequalities in elite sport
- Elite athletes' perceptions of key support, lifestyle and performance factors
- Factors affecting the quality of post-sport career transition of professional athletes
