Nutrition influences the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) either directly or through their action on traditional risk factors, such as blood pressure, plasma lipids, glucose levels, or inflammation. In recent years, nutrition research has focused on the associations between CVD and nutrients from foods and dietary patterns, involving energy metabolism, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, vitamins, minerals, nutrient transport and function, metabolic regulation, nutritional genomics, clinical nutrition, etc. However, accumulating data indicated discordant results for the impact of nutrition on CVD and their risk factors, especially the micronutrient.
In this research topic, we intend to summarize the most recent research regarding the relationship between micronutrient in diet and CVD. Contributions (e.g. original research, reviews, meta-analyses) may cover all research aspects and recent advances related to micronutrient in diet and the occurrence of CVD and their risk factors, highlighting the micronutrient on the occurrence, biological importance and mechanisms of action/interaction of CVD.
We welcome studies (reviews, original research, meta-analyses) on, but not limited to, the following topics:
- micronutrients in diet and prevention/treatment of hypertension
- micronutrients in diet and prevention/treatment of obesity
- micronutrients in diet and prevention/treatment of abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism
- micronutrients in diet and prevention/treatment of coronary heart disease or stroke
