In recent years, climate change has become an increasingly crucial issue for global economies, posing serious challenges for sustainable agricultural food production and food systems. Many Asian countries are agricultural-based and much of the population relies on the sector for their livelihoods as well as for the national economy. With its direct reliance on natural resources and seasonal weather patterns, agriculture is especially vulnerable to the dynamics of climate change. In the context of climate change and the frequent occurrence of extreme climatological events (e.g. floods, droughts, heatwaves, storms, etc), the productivity of major crops in Asia has been negatively affected. Changing climates and their biophysical impacts hamper the productivity and resilience of crops and threaten food security. Hence, farmers are looking to adopt various approaches to cope with climate variability and ensure food crop yields.
The transformation of farmers and their farming systems has a direct impact on achieving several United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Climate Action (SDG 13). Although farmers have adopted a range of measures in response to climate change, they did not always implement appropriate practices due to differences in location-specific factors, including policy settings, or lacked the adaptive capacity to adequately implement changes. In this regard, climate change adaptation strategies should consider location-specific characteristics to minimise productivity loss, enhance food security, maintain food quality, and achieve environmental sustainability. Additionally, to achieve sustainability in agriculture, there is a need to reduce the dependency on external inputs in production. Consequently, it is crucial to find adaptation pathways to enhance crop productivity sustainably for ensuring food security and reducing the environmental footprints.
The goals of this Research Topic are to provide insights into climate change impacts on food systems as well as effective adaptation measures toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. For this Research Topic, we are seeking research papers related to different perspectives and knowledge about:
1. Climate change impacts on crop production in Asia,
2. Effective adaptation strategies and practices across the region, and
3. Opportunities and constraints to sustainable agricultural transformation in Asia.
All types of original research articles and reviews related to the climate change-food systems nexus can be contributed to this Research Topic, including research and analysis from bio-physical, socio-economic, policy and governance, and multidisciplinary perspectives.
This Research Topic welcomes contributions on the following themes, though not limited to these:
1. Studies of adaptation strategies by smallholder farmers in response to the effects of climate change, increasing productivity and minimising the environmental footprints in Asia. This includes studies on climate-resilient agriculture, advanced technologies, and practices in agriculture (e.g., stress-tolerant varieties, disease management, soil conservation, etc) to improve productivity and reduce the environmental footprint. Research on the adoption of sustainable soil fertility practices and crop production management of smallholder farmers in Asia are highly encouraged.
2. Studies on challenges which impede the adoption of effective strategies to adapt to climate change. Research on social, economic, technical, institutional, and environmental impacts on the performance of potential crop systems is also welcome.
3. Studies on policy interventions to ease the risks of climate shocks, such as regulations, national projects, and tactics for successful performance of adaptation strategies. We welcome submissions considering how alternative policies can contribute towards achieving multiple SDGs such as those concerning food security, gender equality, climate change mitigation and adaptation, such as SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 13 (Climate Action), etc.
4. Furthermore, studies on policy interventions addressing gender gaps in gaining the access to agriculture inputs and advanced technologies.
