Children with neurodevelopmental disorders are reported to show deficits and/or different developmental trajectories across multiple cognitive domains (e.g., executive function, language, speech fluency). In monolingual children, there is evidence that some of these domains (e.g., executive function) undergo rapid development in the preschool years coinciding with the age when the symptoms of some neurodevelopmental disorders (e.g., stuttering, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) are commonly reported. Comparatively less is known regarding the development of multilingual children with neurodevelopmental disorders across multiple domains of cognition.
The goal of this Research Topic is to present studies that have examined cognitive development in multilingual children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Findings from these studies are of theoretical and practical importance. This Research Topic will advance our knowledge of multilingual development in atypical cognitive systems, provide direction for translational research and treatment, and has the potential to provide insights into relations between multilingualism and cognition.
We welcome articles that provide new insights on the development of multilingual children with neurodevelopmental disorders. We particularly encourage the submission of studies examining development in multilingual children with neurodevelopmental disorders affecting the speech and language domains. We welcome original research, null findings, and systematic reviews with and without meta-analysis.
