Affective disorders including anxiety, subthreshold depression, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder are a group of psychiatric illnesses that can simultaneously affect one’s emotions, energy, and motivation, which are increasingly common in modern society. According to the surveys conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), affective disorders will become the second leading cause of disability by the year 2030 and lead to a great ‘burden’ worldwide. Affective disorders have severe consequences on functioning and quality of life. Therefore, it appears necessary to gain a better understanding of the potential etiology and pathogenesis of affective disorders, which may provide viable intervention targets for the treatment or prevention.
In this Research Topic, we plan to study: (1) the psychological mechanisms (e.g., cognitive or emotional processes) of individuals affected by affective disorders; (2) the neural mechanisms (e.g., brain function or structure) of individuals affected by affective disorders; (3) the etiology or potential influencing factors of affective disorders; (4) the effects of psychotherapy or other therapies for preventive or therapeutic purposes of affective disorders, especially for the adolescence or the elderly.
The Research Topic hopes to attract studies providing new evidence base related to the potential mechanisms or etiology of individuals affected by affective disorders. We welcome studies that focus on the following themes:
• Original research and meta-analysis studies investigating the etiology and pathogenesis of affective disorders, including anxiety, subthreshold depression, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder.
• Cognitive and emotion processing studies in affective disorders.
• Neuroimaging studies of neural mechanisms underlying affective disorders.
• Intervention studies as well as guideline studies for preventive or therapeutic purposes of affective disorders.
