In celebration of the most impactful areas of research in Green and Sustainable Chemistry, we are proud to present this feature Hot Topic* collection to highlight some of the recent advances in green approaches to the synthesis of nanomaterials.
The emergence of functional nanomaterials has profoundly impacted numerous fields of research. Owing to their unique physical and chemical properties, new applications of nanomaterials are continually being developed in areas such as medicine, catalysis, and optoelectronics, to name just a few. However, the synthesis of these materials can often involve the use of highly toxic reagents and energy intensive processes, leading us to question the sustainability and environmental impact of such research. To resolve these issues, green synthetic routes to nanomaterials are sought after wherein toxic chemicals and unsustainably sourced materials are replaced for more environmentally friendly alternatives, and more efficient processes in terms of energy input and atom economy are developed.
This Research Topic aims to cover recent advances in various aspects of the green synthesis of nanomaterials, including (but not limited to):
• The green synthesis of nanomaterials
• Unique nanomaterial structures or properties generated by green synthetic routes
• Functional nanomaterials generated from sustainable bio-based sources
We encourage authors to draw attention to the “green aspects” presented in their work, drawing comparisons to conventional nanomaterials fabrication where possible.
