As the world's population continues to grow, so does the demand for food and chemical products. The continuous supply of these products becomes a challenge that must be faced head-on. Industrial biotechnology can use the bio-catalysis of microorganisms or enzymes to process and transform substances on a large scale, which can effectively alleviate the current problems of resource shortage, environmental degradation, and economic recession. It plays an important role in the green manufacturing of products and the effective utilization of agricultural biomass resources. In particular, the production efficiency of industrial biotechnology is higher, which can reduce production costs to a certain extent, and can meet the requirements of green cleaning and reduce pollutant emissions, which is of great significance for the implementation of the "carbon peak" and "carbon neutral" goals.
This research topic is mainly to publish full-length articles, short communications, and review articles referring to the research progress of producing food and chemical products, using emerging industrial biotechnology. These important products mainly include functional food and chemical products. Also, the main goals are to discuss the application of advanced biological strategies to solve the problem of low yield and productivity of products, and to meet the requirements of industrialization as much as possible. These advanced industrial biotechnologies include but are not limited to metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, food biotechnology, protein engineering, and so on.
This research topic mainly discusses the problems encountered in the production of functional food and chemical products using industrial biotechnology. By analyzing the development of industrial biotechnology research status, it is helpful to reveal research deficiencies, to better promote the development of industrial biotechnology. We welcome, but are not limited to, research on the following topics:
(1) Food Microbiology and Biotechnology (including food enzymology, food ingredient biomanufacturing, fermentation engineering)
(2) Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (protein engineering, protein expression, and characterization, enzyme immobilization based on nanomaterials)
(3) Metabolic Engineering and Synthetic Biology (dynamic regulation of gene expression, gene circuit construction, genome editing, biosensor construction, adaptive evolution)
