There are an estimated 281 million international migrants worldwide. Migration is an important risk factor for common and severe mental disorders and there is an increased incidence of certain mental disorders among the migrants compared to the local population. Variation also exists in the demographics, clinical characteristics, outcomes, and access to services of populations in different geographical locations e.g. Europe vs the Middle East.
The goal of this research is to shed light on the mental health characteristics of migrant and local populations to reinforce the prevention and management of mental disorders. It will also assist in the better development of cross-cultural clinical skills of mental health professionals and curb the stigma against mental illnesses among different cultures.
• Incidence and Prevalence of mental disorders among migrants and local population
• Mental illness presentation among various cultures
• Stigma about mental illness in different cultures and strategies to tackle it
• Mental Health services delivery for migrants and local population
• Genetic, pathological and other biological bases of mental health problems in migrants and local populations
• Mental health profiles of a special group of migrants (Pregnant, elderly, disabilities, physical co-morbidities, etc.) and local population
