The degeneration of the central nervous system has been studied extensively. However, in mammals, adult neurons fail to regenerate, and much effort has been focused on uncovering the mechanism of axon regeneration in the central nervous system (CNS). The retina is an interesting component of the CNS as it is susceptible to degeneration and specific diseases which can be studied through animal models such as drosophila. As well as being used itself as a model of axon regeneration for the wider CNS.
In this Research Topic, Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience – Methods and Model Organisms is looking to address key aspects of retina regeneration and degeneration in order to promote the discussion around this topic and to facilitate knowledge dissemination.
We particularly welcome the submission of Original Research, Review, Methods, and Perspective articles on the following sub-topics:
• Inflammatory mechanisms in IRD (inherited retinal degeneration).
• Cell death mechanisms in retinal degeneration.
• Neuroprotective strategies in the retina.
• Biomarkers of retinal degenerative diseases.
• molecular treatments for IRD
