Six-membered heterocycles are a crucial and significant category among organic chemical compounds, with a considerable amount of investigation devoted to the development of new molecules. They commonly exist as the essential backbone in diverse active medicinal natural products. Six-membered heterocyclic systems, however, do not only exist as the main structure of compounds with various biological properties utilized as traditional remedies but also, they currently are prescribed and market purchasable medicines. The above-mentioned facts reveal and highlight the critical function of these heterocyclic systems in the invention of modern drugs. Over the last decades, new strategies for the synthesis of six-membered heterocyclic systems have had a huge impact on both organic and medicinal chemistry. These strategies comprise a wide range of procedures for their synthesis and functionalization. They have shown effective biological properties and are even used as medicine for diseases.
In this Research Topic, we aim to tackle and discuss the existing problems in the synthesis of different six-membered heterocyclic systems and find new and efficient synthetic routes. Notably, how they exist in nature or are synthesized by researchers will be discussed. Moreover, they have attractive chemistry, for example, they may contain more than one heteroatom in their ring, or they may possess more than one ring in their structures. They are also exploited as novel agents with biological activities such as anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant. Novel strategies to prepare six-membered heterocyclic systems, their functionalization, and pharmaceutical and material investigations of these key structures are still interesting scopes of organic and medicinal chemistry.
