Rugby League, Rugby Union and Rugby Sevens are global sports that are participated in at amateur to elite professional levels by males and females.
As we approach the Rugby League World Cup 2021 (Women and Men, now 2022), Rugby Sevens World Cup 2022 (Women and Men), Rugby Union World Cup 2022 (Women) and 2023 (Men), and the Olympic Games 2024, the sports have grown in global popularity and seen increased scientific interest. However, further research is still needed to understand the factors underpinning performance, along with possible mechanisms involved.
The aim of this Research Topic is to build on the existing scientific literature on all rugby codes and further explore training, testing, and performance at the amateur and elite levels. Specifically, we welcome papers that address:
• Factors determining performance, including: technical/tactical, physiological, biomechanical, cognitive, psychosocial and nutritional factors
• Training and match demands in rugby
• Training interventions and testing in rugby
• Rehabilitation and strategies to reduce injury risk in rugby
• Acute and chronic effects of rugby training and match play
• Talent development pathways for rugby
• Coaching in rugby
• Strength and conditioning for rugby performance
• Recent developments within rugby research
