Organizations are increasingly faced with a complex and unstable working and business environments where unforeseen events can turn into business disasters (Vogus and Sutcliffe, 2007). Crises and pandemics such as the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the world rapidly, with the first case reported in December 2019 and the outbreak of the disease as a pandemic on March 11, 2020 according to the World Health Organization, have significantly impacted organizational performance and, by extension, employee behaviour and performance.
The COVID-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way people work. Due to the uncertainty and ambiguity associated with the unprecedented global crisis, organizations have faced challenges in enabling their employees to work productively and maintain their work commitment and engagement throughout the pandemic (Gallup, 2020). In parallel, characteristics of Industry 4.0 such as interconnectivity and smart automation rapidly emerged and were implemented in organisations around the world. As such, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a particularly demanding environment for implementing human resource management policies and practices. Specifically, managers and supervisors have had to deal with new challenges related to the adaptation of their workforce to cope with the radical changes occurring in both the organizational and working environment. Although the field of organizational behaviour has been extensively researched, the pandemic and the rapid digitalization of organizations, disrupted and transformed organizational environments, and culture and employee working environment have not.
The goal of this Research Topic is to shed light on the impact of these changes on crucial and fundamental organizational behavior areas such as: employee commitment, job autonomy, job stress, employee turnover, motivation, team processes, absenteeism, change management, remote leadership, and more. We believe that this article collection will motivate, update, and provide direction and guidelines to future researchers in the field of organizational psychology. Due to the fact Covid-19 lockdowns forced employees to work remotely and organisations to implement and utilize segments of Industry 4.0 rapidly, it is of great importance to map the impact of these organizational changes directly onto employees’ behaviour and eventually performance.
Contributions should describe state of the art research, outline recent developments and major accomplishments that have been achieved in the last three years and also propose future research aspects focusing on moving the field of organizational behaviour forward. Furthermore, authors are encouraged to identify the challenges that appeared in the field of organizational psychology during the pandemic and how these challenges were, will, or should be addressed. We welcome empirical research, systematic reviews, case studies and especially studies that provide practical implications for both academics and professionals alike.
