Occupational and environmental health, two closely related domains, are involved in a great many important issues for the human population. Air and water quality, as well as soil pollution, have a great impact on environmental health, which affects human health indirectly. These factors will remain on the global attention list for many years. With the social and industrial development, food safety and waste disposal issues become more and more significant. Nowadays, workers are exposed to too many hazards that can cause adverse health effects. Regarding occupational diseases, it has multifactorial etiology, although workplace hazards would be the much more direct and specific causes than work itself.
Occupational and environmental health are two important settings for all of us, and several hazards exist in the settings, especially for middle-aged and older adults. Older adults may experience more exposure time in the environment and workplace, resulting in a high level of cumulative exposure concentration than others. Thus, we should pay more attention to this people group, and much more strategies should be executed to promote their occupational and environmental health in the future.
For this Research topic, we aimed to assess the association between hazards exposure in the workplace and environment and adverse health effects among middle-aged and older adults. Meanwhile, we aimed to explore the biomarkers of hazards exposure and the potential mechanism underlying the association. In addition, we hope that the Research topic could provide some clues for the prevention and control of hazards exposure among middle-aged and older adults in the workplace and environment.
This Research Topic aims to show recent developments in this ?eld, ranging from epidemiological studies exploring the associations and biomarkers to animal experiments aiming at exploring the potential mechanism. Original Research, Systematic Review, Review, Mini Review, Methods, and Brief Research Report are welcomed regarding the following sub-topics, including but not limited to:
• Association between hazards exposure and adverse effects among middle-aged and older adults
• Cause investigation of occupational diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, metabolic syndrome, hearing loss, etc.
• Risk assessment of hazards exposure, including toxicant, noise, dust, shift work, etc.
• Association between hazards exposure and its biomarkers.
• Health screening and interventions in environmental and workplace settings, preventive protocols to control hazard exposure.
All submitted manuscripts will go through a rigorous peer-review process.
