About this Research Topic
The 12th International Workshop on Autoantibodies and Autoimmunity (IWAA) took place on 28-30 August, 2014 in São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil. With a congregation of physicians, research scientists and innovators from academic and industry laboratories, all dedicated to a pursuit of excellence in autoimmune diseases, the 12th IWAA was an unprecedented opportunity to meet some of the most renowned experts on autoantibodies and autoimmunity.
This Research topic is dedicated to provide a collection of articles related to the program of the meeting and will cover important topics on traditional and novel autoantibodies relevant to systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases, neurological and paraneoplastic syndromes, celiac and inflammatory bowel disease, glomerulonephritis, and autoimmune liver diseases, among others. Basic aspects of autoimmunity will be encompassed, including the participation of long-lived plasma cells; the role of citrullination and carbamylation; the interaction of environment, genetics and epigenetics; the role of animal models; and the interface between cancer, autoimmunity and immunodeficiency.
In addition, there will be position statement documents related to two parallel seminal workshops within the 12th IWAA: the International Consensus on Antinuclear Antibody Patterns (ICAP) workshop and the International Autoantibody Standardization (IAS) workshop. These were commissioned by the Autoantibody Standardization Committee, affiliated with the International Union of Immunology Societies (IUIS). The ICAP merged previous experience of national initiatives in several countries, including Brazil, Denmark, England, France and Germany, in a concerted effort to build an international consensus on recommendations for the most significant HEp-2-ANA patterns. The International Autoantibody Standardizing (IAS) workshop gathered academic and industry research scientists that discussed alternatives for the establishment of international standards for autoantibody determination. In view of the wide array of commercial assays marketed and adopted in clinical laboratories worldwide, the development of international standards it is of upmost importance. In response to this scenario, the IAS workshop established objective propositions for international autoantibody standards.
Participants of the IWAA are welcome to submit Opinion articles related to their respective participation at the meeting. All submitted manuscripts will be peer-reviewed.
