Metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) have been implicated in a range of physiological and pathological processes. One example is substance abuse / addiction where mGluRs have been linked to reward/reinforcement, drug-induced plasticity, incentive learning and extinction. In addition, the complex interactions between mGluRs and other protein molecules is increasingly acknowledged as relevant to this issue, as well as other facets of glutamatergic signalling. This Frontiers Research Topic aims to bring together leaders in mGluR research spanning the themes indicated to present a cohesive and integrated view of the current knowledge and future directions for this important field of endeavour.
