Background

Hearing loss is the most common sensory disorder in human beings, which not only brings a lot of inconvenience to patients in life but also causes various psychological and mental diseases. How to prevent and treat hearing loss has become a common problem all over the world. Lesions in the cochlea, auditory nerve, or auditory center can lead to impairment of sound perception and cognitive function. It is generally believed that sensorineural hearing loss is related to various factors such as genetics, drugs, infection, disease, trauma, age, and environment. With the in-depth exploration of the pathogenesis of hearing diseases and the advancement of diagnosis and treatment technology, gene therapy will be the future development direction of hearing regeneration.
Gene therapy provides a new strategy for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss, which can restore the function of the auditory system by inhibiting hair cell death, promoting hair cell regeneration, and regulating the expression of deafness genes. Although great progress has been made in gene therapy for hearing loss, there are still many challenges. Therefore, by exploring the mechanism of sensorineural hearing loss, applying new technologies and materials to optimize the effect of gene therapy to restore auditory function will be a key scientific problem that needs to be solved urgently.
This Research Topic aims to promote the investigation of mechanisms of auditory system damage and the application of gene therapy. It is hoped that with the help of new technologies and methods such as gene therapy, stem cell, new biomaterials, and tissue engineering, the theoretical and experimental basis for the prevention and treatment of sensorineural hearing loss can be provided, and the results of basic research can eventually be transformed into clinical applications. The main scope of solicitation is research on the damage mechanism of the cochlea and auditory central system, gene therapy in the field of sensorineural hearing loss, inner ear stem cells, new biological materials, tissue engineering, and other new technologies and methods of development. In terms of article type, both Original Research articles on the pathogenesis of deafness, as well as research and Review articles on new technologies and methods in the field of gene therapy for sensorineural hearing loss are welcome.
