The International Day of Forests takes place annually on the 21stth of March and presents an opportunity for global reflection on forest restoration and the ecosystems services that forests provide.
Forests, alongside their sustainable management, are key for combating climate change, as well as for maintaining water quality by influencing the volume of water that is available and regulating the water flow. As well as providing clean, pre-filtered water to much of the world, forests can further act as a buffer to decrease occurrence of water-related disasters such as landslides and floods.
In honour of the International Day of Forests 2022, Frontiers in Water is launching a Research Topic devoted entirely to the celebration of forests and the role they play in the water cycle and water-related processes.
Topics of interest may include, but are by no means limited to:??
• Water quantity and quality in forested areas;
• The effects of deforestation on freshwater;
• Payments for water services for those that own forests; and,
• The role of forests in flood protection and natural disaster mitigation.
