Currently, non-precious metal-based materials play a vitally important role in functional materials and devices, such as structural components, energy storage, conversion devices, wearable electronics, and so on. Due to the advantages of cost, abundance, and sustainability, non-precious metals and their derivatives have attracted tremendous research interest. The deliberate material design and understanding of the fundamental mechanisms are conducive to the significant development and applications of non-precious metal-based materials.
Starting from structural design, chemical composition design, and atomic orders and electronic states, the developments of non-precious metal-based materials require comprehensive design perspectives. Furthermore, elucidating the fundamental mechanism of the structural-property relationship often gives rise to some new insights into the smart design of non-precious metal-based materials. Smart design to induce targeted properties and functions promotes them as advanced multifunctional materials that bring essential progress in all fields. More importantly, to achieve the designed functionality, the most crucial consideration is utilizing appropriate smart materials that are compatible with their working principles, structures, and materials. However, understanding the relationship among design, fundamentals, and functionality of non-precious metal-based materials is less covered in the literature. Thus the present Research Topic aims to bring together the work that links the relationship for advanced non-precious metal-based materials with fine functionality.
This Research Topic focuses on the development of non-precious metals-based functional compounds. The Topic Editors welcome submissions of Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:
• Non-precious metal-based materials for battery, supercapacitor, fuel cell
• Non-precious metal-based materials for electrocatalyst and photocatalyst
• Non-precious metal-based materials for smart materials
• Non-precious metal-based materials: corrosion monitoring, and evaluation and protection
