Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in females, and in many countries is the most frequently diagnosed cancer. In 2020, this translated into over 2 million new diagnoses across the globe, and is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in many countries.
Over recent years, advances have been made with regards to early detection and screening, as well as the development of various targeted therapies, and these developments have aided in improving 5-year survival rates.
Surgery remains the gold-standard approach to treatment, and is typically used with concurrent therapies. Surgical approaches have undergone significant development over the decades, moving away from demolitive to more conservative approaches, maintaining important aesthetic elements whilst still prioritizing oncological safety. Novel techniques are continuously being developed, as are new staging methods, to further improve survival rates and move away from aggressive approaches. In parallel, advances have also been made in concurrent treatment options, as well as our ability to screen and diagnose patients at earlier stages. These advances together help with the overall treatment and management of breast cancer.
This Research Topic welcomes submissions related, but not limited to, to novel surgical interventions and the following areas of research:
- Emerging techniques to treating breast cancer
- Oncoplastic techniques as a subspecialty of breast cancer treatment - Novel staging methods
- Advances in breast cancer management
