Plant fungal pathogens are the most diverse and potent biotic agents interacting with plants and cause severe loss for economics and production in agricultural systems. Plant-fungal interactions are very complicated, as the multifaceted process involves two living organisms; the plant and the fungal. Plants evolved a two-tiered immune receptor system to recognize and respond to fungal pathogens while the fungal pathogens try to counteract the plant’s resistance. In face of this, new strategies of control are needed. Understanding how fungal pathogens employ adaptive strategies and which mechanism plants utilize to control their resistance/susceptibility during plant-fungal interactions will aid in the prevention of disease in plants.
The goal of this Research Topic will cover a wide variety of areas, aiming to unravel the complexity of plant-fungal interactions from several aspects.
We welcome submissions of different types of manuscripts including original research papers, reviews, and methods, including but not limited to:
• Molecular interaction between plants and fungi
• Molecular analyses of fungal pathogens and fungal pathogen evolution
• Suppression or evasion of plant defense responses by fungal pathogens
• Plant immune responses to fungal pathogens at the molecular level
• The reciprocal relationship between the plant immune system and the microbiome
• The control of plant-fungal pathogen interactions by the environment
• Technological approaches to control fungal pathogens
