The COVID-19 pandemic has placed substantial burdens on health systems and communities globally. While governments’ responses are diverse, it is critical to understand the principles and impacts of different measures on COVID-19 control, especially in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Vietnam, in the context of responsive operations in eliminating the COVID-19, presents an interesting case with a long developmental history of the Preventive Medicine System. In the 120-year anniversary of Hanoi Medical University, the first medical educational institution in Indochina, the country's success against COVID-19 offers an opportunity to produce a series of articles showcasing these reforms and describing the nation’s activities not just against COVID-19 but also in navigating the epidemiological transition, ongoing health system reform and reorganization towards efficient and equitable performance.
We recommend this Research Topic as a collection of the latest evidence on the experience of the country to control the COVID-19 pandemic as well as historical development and principles of the Vietnam Preventive Medicine System. It is now clear that the COVID-19 pandemic will not be the last such emerging infectious disease challenge facing low- and middle-income countries, but its pandemic nature and the widely differing response effectiveness in different countries offer an ideal opportunity to identify properties of health system reform that can help fragile health systems and developing economies to rise to the challenges they face. Vietnam, as a country performing very well in managing both the epidemiological transition and the threat of emerging infectious diseases, offers the ideal opportunity at this critical juncture in the development of global health to identify key lessons for health system strengthening in low- and middle-income countries.
This is open to all research reports, reviews, opinion pieces, and an associated editorial comment including but are not limited to the following themes:
• 1. Strategies and Effectiveness of Vietnam’s responses to COVID-19 pandemic
• 2. Epidemiological Estimation and Projection of COVID-19
• 3. Health, Psychosocial and Economic impacts of the pandemic
• 4. Health Services and Clinical Research on COVID-19
• 5. Comparative Analysis of COVID-19 Policies and Responses across nations, regions, and economic groups
• 6. The history and development of the Preventive Medicine System of Vietnam.
