Artificial intelligence (AI) plays an increasingly ubiquitous role in our lives, from self-driving cars to factory automation. In education, AI is also being implemented ever more widely, from automated assessment to speech recognition and adaptive and personalized provision of educational resources. The potential for supporting language learning and teaching is significant and has started to be explored but considerable gaps in our understanding of the affordances and limitations of the technology exist. For example, it remains unclear how AI can be applied to support language skills that are required in real-life language learning purposes; what types of instant feedback in the AI programs can meet learners’ language learning goals, and how to design a variety of feedback to enhance learners’ independent study on their computers or mobile devices. This Research Topic aims to address such questions by inviting contributions in the following areas, including but not limited to:
Learners’ motivation in using AI for language learning
Using AI in error correction and automated assessment
Using AI in proving feedback
Using AI for speaking/writing/reading/listening practice
Learners’ and teachers’ perceptions of using AI for language learning
We welcome submissions of Original Research, Review, and Systematic Review.
