Neurodegenerative disease refers to a wide range of conditions that affect the neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems. These cells are particularly susceptible to damage, and the inherent complexity of the nervous system often impedes regenerative growth. In recent years, scientists have made significant progress towards developing new therapeutics aimed at treating neuronal damage and degeneration. These efforts have emerged from the application of a diverse array of in vitro and in vivo model systems that recapitulate the molecular mechanisms thought to underlie neurodegeneration in conditions such as traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, stroke, peripheral nerve injury, and psychiatric disease. In many cases, scientists have made significant progress with both traditional and novel therapeutic strategies, offering hope to the incredibly high number of patients suffering worldwide from these devastating and currently incurable forms of neurodegeneration.
In this Research Topic, we aim to discuss both the most recent and relevant models of neurodegeneration, as well as the latest therapeutic interventions aimed at treating or preventing neurodegenerative disease. We encourage the submission of thoughtful perspectives on this topic, as well as original research that sheds light on this burgeoning field.
