We are delighted to present the inaugural Frontiers in Plant Science, "Women in Plant Symbiotic Interactions” series of article collections. This Research Topic is headlined by members of our Plant Symbiotic Interactions editorial board.
According to the 2021 UNESCO science report, women are still a minority in sciences as only 33 % of researchers worldwide are women. Additionally, women remain underrepresented among senior scientists in academia and likewise experience gaps in funding and promotion. Initial studies have also shown that the COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately affecting female researchers. Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are discouraging girls and women away from science-related fields, and STEM research in particular. Science and gender equality are, however, essential to ensure sustainable development as highlighted by UNESCO. In order to change traditional mindsets, gender equality must be promoted, stereotypes defeated, and girls and women should be encouraged to pursue STEM careers.
Therefore, Frontiers in Plant Science is proud to offer this platform to promote the work of women scientists, across all fields of Plant Symbiotic Interactions.
The aim of this collection is to provide insights into the multifaceted domain of Plant Symbiotic Interactions Research. Original manuscripts (both Research Papers and Reviews) that present experimental advances, methodological novelties as well as current theoretical views in the field will be welcome. Contributions addressing current challenging and compelling problems, as well as applications of symbiosis-based strategy for sustainable environmental management are particularly encouraged.
An additional aim is to present global views on this field and to encourage women, minorities, and early-career researchers to contribute to this Research Topic
Note: Submissions to this Research Topic are not limited to female researchers alone.
