Mitochondria play essential roles in bioenergetics, redox balance, metabolic flexibility, Ca2+ homeostasis, cell signaling, immunity, growth, development, and cell death. On the other hand, mitochondrial dysfunction is a common pathophysiologic process in various conditions such as metabolic syndrome, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and age-related diseases. Accumulating evidence suggests that the restoration of mitochondrial functions by improving mitochondrial metabolism, suppressing oxidative stress, and enhancing mitochondrial quality control could be a therapeutic target for chronic metabolic diseases; however, the molecular mechanisms related to the pathogenic progression of mitochondrial dysfunction has not been clearly identified, yet.
In this article collection, we welcome manuscripts on the recent advances in the scientific knowledge of physiologic regulation and pathophysiologic alterations in mitochondrial activities, which are required to develop therapeutic strategies against chronic metabolic diseases and age-related diseases
