Periodontitis, a major chronic inflammatory disease of the oral mucosa, has become a public health problem and is epidemiologically associated with several chronic inflammation-driven disorders, namely cardio-metabolic, autoimmune, infertility, neurodegenerative diseases. Emerging evidence from observational to interventional studies indicates potential causal link between periodontitis and systemic comorbidities through a biologically plausible local and systemic mechanism.
Although several risk factors related to periodontitis are described, prevention strategies based on the factors haven't been successful, as are indicated by the results from randomized controlled trials and in the growing number of newly and recurrence cases of periodontitis. Understanding the prevalence and the impact of periodontitis on systemic health should be taken to identify successful strategies more broadly that may potentially prevent adverse systemic outcomes. Therefore, we are seeking research papers examining how periodontal health is related to systemic health, and how the change in systemic health may affect periodontal function in a bidirectional way.
This Research Topic aims to present the latest advances in the intersection of periodontitis and systemic health, in order to better understand the local and systemic mechanism links the relationship between periodontal disease and systemic inflammatory comorbidities and to improve systemic health through changes in periodontal risk factors.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
-Novel periodontitis risk factors related to systemic health outcomes
-Primary prevention of periodontal disease decline and dementia through the improvement of cardiovascular health
-Potential impact of population health policy on prevention of periodontal and systemic health
-Evaluation of lifestyle intervention on periodontal outcomes
-Application of novel epidemiological methods in issues related to periodontal health and systemic health
