Gastric cancer is one the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide resulting in malignant tumors in the digestive tract. The only radical treatment is surgical resection, with only a few biomarkers being translated into molecularly targeted therapies.
Prognostic biomarkers play an important role in the prognosis of gastric cancer. However, the prognosis is very poor and, although there is a lot of literature on biomarkers for gastric cancer, there is still an urgent need for less-invasive tests with cancer-specific biomarkers, to facilitate diagnosis, recurrence prediction, and personalized chemotherapy.
Surgery still remains the main treatment for this cancer, but pre-operative diagnosis and clinical staging are fundamental for the prompt management of the patients. For this purpose, new methods of diagnosis or novel molecular biomarkers are to be discovered for prognosis and reliable therapeutic targets.
In this Research Topic, we will welcome original research, reviews, and other article types discussing the treatment options for gastric cancer patients with special emphasis on the manuscript which will focus on the discovery of new biomarkers for gastric cancer diagnosis and prognosis prediction.
