Environmental pollution is one of the major global problems aroused in the current era. It is essential to detect and analyze the hazardous pollutants present in the environment, which requires intensive research to develop fast, sensitive, selective, reproducible and cost-effective technologies. Electrochemical sensors have received utmost attention as this technology offers simplicity and cost-effective development with high sensitivity, selectivity, stability, reliability, and quick response. Moreover, this technology offers field sensing, which is not possible with other analytical techniques. The electrochemical sensing mechanism seeks very less potential/current, which makes the device portable to use on-site continuous monitoring. In the perspective of environmental monitoring, there is a need for certain modification of electrodes to enhance the features based on the pollutant present in the environment.
There is a need to have a discussion on the recent advancement in electrochemistry, specifically in identification of existing pollutants present in the environment either by naturally occurring or due to industrial waste. The engineering of the electrochemical sensors have great potential in detecting and removing hazardous materials from polluted environment, mainly from air, soil and water. This Research Topic will serve as a platform for developing the technology for rapid detection of these pollutants with higher sensitivity, selectivity and stable response.
